Kazakh leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed the country's readiness to actively engage with the Eastern and Central European and Central Asian Commission on Drug Policy (ECECACD) during a meeting with ECECACD Chair Aleksander Kwaśniewski on June 19. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation with the ECECACD in exchanging information and promoting best practices to combat drug addiction and trafficking, Akorda reports.
President Tokayev emphasized the need to revise Kazakhstan's legislation to impose stricter penalties for those involved in the production and illegal sale of narcotic drugs, as outlined in his address at the National Kurultai. Kwaśniewski presented new programs and measures aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of anti-drug policy. Both parties agreed to continue their joint efforts to prevent drug addiction and combat the illegal distribution of drugs.
The ECECACD, established in November 2021, aims to stimulate an open debate and promote evidence-based drug policy approaches across the region. It is inspired by the Global Commission on Drug Policy and collaborates closely with it.
The Commissioners, who are regional leaders from various professional backgrounds, have united with an awareness of the current drug control regime's failure and the urgent need to advocate for drug policies based on scientific evidence, human rights, public health, and security.
