The European Commission and Kazakhstan have jointly inaugurated the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor Coordination Platform. This initiative aims to elevate the safety and sustainability standards of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor while enhancing its functionality to become a competitive multimodal route linking Europe and Asia in 15 days or less.
The launch event, held with the participation of representatives from Central Asian countries, states along the corridor, international financial institutions, and non-EU G7 nations, emphasized the critical role of transport infrastructure in fostering economic prosperity.
Marat Karabayev, Kazakhstan's Minister of Transport, stressed the importance of collaboration and exchange of expertise in achieving common goals, inviting partners from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey to join efforts towards the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.
“The establishment of the Coordination Platform provides us with a unique opportunity to join forces, exchange experience and perspectives to reach common goals. I would like to note that our partners from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, as well as Türkiye, have been invited to join to this effort, which plays an important role in terms of achieving major and sustainable goals for the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route,” the Minister Karabayev shared.
Expressing gratitude for the support extended by the European Union, Minister Karabayev emphasized the pivotal role of the Coordination Platform in advancing sustainable goals for regional development.
Henrik Hololei, Hors-Classe Adviser at the Directorate-General for International Partnerships in the European Commission, highlighted the significance of the Coordination Platform in bridging Central Asia and Europe through sustainable transport connections. He reiterated the EU's commitment to supporting partners in achieving their development and environmental objectives.
Maja Bakran, Deputy Director-General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission, emphasized the instrumental role of the Platform in modernizing and optimizing the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor. She outlined the platform's objectives, including the coordination of investments in rail, road, and port infrastructure to drive sustainable economic development in the region.
“The Coordination Platform will be instrumental in making the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor a multimodal, modern, competitive, sustainable, predictable, smart and fast route linking Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. The coordination efforts among the various stakeholders will drive forward deeper connections and contribute to sustainable economic development of the region,” Maja Bakran noted.
The Coordination Platform will facilitate the promotion of the corridor and coordinate efforts on priority infrastructure projects in Central Asia, aiming to enhance connectivity and efficiency. Additionally, it will serve as a catalyst for investments in innovative technologies, contributing to the region's economic growth and competitiveness.
The European Union's long-standing partnership with the region has been instrumental in improving infrastructure and fostering sustainable development. Collaborative efforts within the newly established Platform are expected to not only enhance transport infrastructure but also strengthen economic ties, enhance safety, and accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies in the transport sector.
