Uzbekistan's digital payments projected to reach $98.4bn by 2026

Uzbekistan's digital payments projected to reach $98.4bn by 2026

Digital payments suggests that Uzbekistan's annual digital payments, which were $46.7bn in 2022, could reach or exceed $98.4bn by 2026.

Bolstered by robust macroeconomic indicators, Uzbekistan is witnessing unprecedented growth in various sectors. Forecasts predict a 45% increase in GDP from 2021 to 2026, accompanied by a 15% rise in population and a 44% surge in monthly salaries. Moreover, the proliferation of smartphones, expected to reach 77% penetration next year, is fueling a transformation in consumer behavior and commerce.

The ancient land of Uzbekistan, once a hub of trade along the famed Silk Road, is now embracing a new frontier: fintech. With a surge in economic growth and technological advancement, the nation is rapidly becoming a playground for digital commerce and financial innovation.

One of the driving forces behind Uzbekistan's fintech boom is its commitment to financial inclusion. With a significant portion of the population remaining unbanked or underbanked, there exists a fertile ground for rapid fintech expansion. Analysts project a five to sevenfold growth in the sector in the mid-term, driven by the adoption of peer-to-peer payments, digital transactions, and QR code usage facilitated by improved internet connectivity.

Uzum, an early entrant into the digital finance arena, has spearheaded this revolution. However, it is not alone in the landscape. A vibrant startup ecosystem has emerged in Tashkent, fostering a culture of tech entrepreneurship and innovation. From educational institutions to coworking spaces, the entrepreneurial spirit is palpable across the country.

Central to Uzbekistan's fintech evolution is the emergence of platforms catering to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Uzum's digital ecosystem, which encompasses a marketplace, express delivery services, traditional and digital banks, buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) services, and automotive marketplaces, includes an app designed to provide financing to early-stage businesses. The uptake of this SME element stresses the country's growing appetite for entrepreneurship and innovation.

Indeed, Uzbekistan's transformation is driven by the dynamism of its people. As the economy undergoes a metamorphosis, Uzbeks are embracing digitalization with zeal, both as consumers and entrepreneurs. Businesses that tap into this energy and facilitate the burgeoning startup culture stand to reap significant rewards in this evolving landscape.
