French renewable energy company Voltalia plans to implement two major projects in the Bukhara region of Uzbekistan, amounting to a total investment of $1bn. The details were shared by Yoni Ammar, Vice President of Voltalia, during an interview with the O’zbekiston 24 TV channel.
Voltalia's Expansion in Uzbekistan
Voltalia's presence in Uzbekistan began a year and a half ago when the company won a tender for the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant in the Khorezm region. The project, which launched in March with the participation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Voltalia's leadership, has a total cost of $400 mn.
“Our goal is to introduce 1 GW of capacity. It is planned to implement projects worth $1 bn. At the moment, 35 permanent jobs have been created. As our activities scale, so will the number of new vacancies,” stated Yoni Ammar
One of the new projects in Bukhara is the construction of a hybrid power plant in the Gijduvan district. This plant is expected to have a capacity of 400 MW and will require an investment of $400 mn. The second project, also in the renewable energy sector, is estimated to cost $650 mn and will create 30 new jobs. Voltalia secured the tender for the construction of the solar power plant in Khorezm at the end of 2022.
Voltalia planned to secure a $34 mn loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to support the solar power plant project in Khorezm. In addition, the company has formalized a preliminary agreement for the construction of a 400 MW hybrid power plant and energy storage system in the Navoi region. These agreements were made in collaboration with the Uzbek government in November 2023.
In May, Voltalia announced the potential construction of a 500 MW battery system in the Khorezm region. This advanced energy storage complex is intended to collect and store energy from the photovoltaic power plant currently under construction.
