Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Company (NMMC) stands at the forefront of gender equality and women's empowerment in Uzbekistan, leading the list of top employers of women with 12,444 female employees. The Ministry of Employment's report highlights the efforts of NMMC and other enterprises in promoting gender diversity in the workforce.
Uzbekistan made significant strides in advancing gender equality, ranking among the top five countries implementing key reforms since October 2022, according to the World Bank. Recent efforts include improving access to financial and credit resources, with a presidential decree allocating $100 mn towards vocational training and entrepreneurship for women in Uzbekistan.
Chairwoman of the Senate of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Tanzila Narbayeva, highlighted the changing societal norms regarding women's education and entrepreneurship. She noted a doubling of women entrepreneurs in recent years, surpassing 200,000. Additionally, Narbayeva pointed out that over half of university students in Uzbekistan are now female, indicating a shift in gender participation in education and business.
There has been a steady increase in women's representation in Uzbekistan's public administration over the past seven years, rising from 27% to 35%. Currently, women constitute 32% of deputies in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and 25% of the members of the Senate, with women represented in every district.
Despite these advancements, the unemployment rate among women in Uzbekistan stands at 50%, while among men it is 30%, as per Sima Sami Bahous, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-Women. Addressing this disparity remains a key challenge for Uzbekistan in its pursuit of gender equality in the workforce.
Specifically, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5—focused on Gender Equality—aims to ensure the full and equitable participation of women and girls across various spheres of life, including education, employment, decision-making processes, and access to essential resources. Uzbekistan’s commitment to promoting gender diversity, empowering women economically, and addressing existing disparities aligns with the global endeavour to create a more just and sustainable future
