Almaty, the bustling financial and commercial hub of Kazakhstan, is set to transform with the inauguration of a passenger terminal at its airport, marking the culmination of a long-awaited development effort, Anton Usov, Chief Spokesman for Central Asia and Mongolia at EBRD, shared. This milestone is the result of an investment backed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and other financial institutions.
The project, with a total investment of $780mn, focuses on the construction of a modern passenger terminal and the expansion of existing infrastructure at the Almaty airport. The EBRD played a pivotal role by extending a substantial long-term loan of $150mn, complemented by a senior long-term A/B loan of $222mn from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Both institutions also facilitated additional funding from the Eurasian Development Bank and DEG, amounting to $39mn each, bringing the total debt financing package to $450mn.
Leading the consortium of investors is TAV Airports, a renowned global operator with extensive experience in airport management. This partnership highlights a commitment to delivering world-class facilities and services to meet the growing demands of passengers and airlines alike.
The centerpiece of the project is the construction of a new international terminal, designed to accommodate up to 14 mn passengers annually—an upgrade from the current capacity of 3 mn. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and adhering to International Air Transport Association (IATA) service standards, the terminal promises streamlined check-in and baggage handling processes, enhancing overall operational efficiency and passenger experience.
One of the most notable aspects of the new terminal is its commitment to sustainability. Almaty will proudly boast the first EDGE Advanced certified sustainable airport in Central Asia, a designation that signifies a reduction in energy costs by at least 40%. This eco-friendly approach aligns with global efforts to mitigate environmental impact and promote responsible infrastructure development.
