Kazakhstan is doubling down on its efforts to curb methane emissions, with the Minister of Energy, Almasadam Satkaliyev, emphasizing the nation's commitment to this cause during a meeting with representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Astana.
Satkaliyev highlighted Kazakhstan's participation in the Global Methane Commitment as evidence of its dedication to a sustainable energy transition and gradual decarbonization of the economy. He noted a positive trend in reducing greenhouse gases in the country's energy sector, citing a significant decrease of 1.2 mn tons of CO2-equivalent in methane emissions over five years.

Satkaliyev affirmed, underscoring the importance of collaboration with international institutions like the EBRD to accelerate progress in reducing anthropogenic methane emissions. He proposed joint efforts to attract technological support, investments, and grants to achieve optimal results swiftly.
Furthermore, Satkaliyev discussed the Ministry's draft concept for a hydrogen strategy aimed at advancing research on hydrogen production, transportation, and storage technologies. He outlined plans to launch pilot projects within Kazakhstan to test innovative approaches in hydrogen energy before widespread implementation.
The Minister highlighted ongoing collaboration between Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy and the EBRD in various sectors, including renewable energy sources, electric power, and gas industries. Notably, several agreements and memorandums totaling approximately $536 mn have been signed to support these joint initiatives.
