Kazakh Minister of Industry and Construction Kanat Sharlapayev and EBRD's First Vice President Jürgen Rigterink signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to modernize Kazakhstan’s mining industry, the EBRD’s press service reports.
The MOU establishes an advanced system for capturing, processing, and disseminating geoscientific documents, including maps and data. This initiative aligns with the European Union-Kazakhstan critical raw materials roadmap and strengthens their strategic partnership.
A key aspect of the agreement is the development of the mining sector’s legal and regulatory frameworks. The parties involved aim to enhance the ministry’s capacity to adopt, implement, monitor, and enforce sector regulations effectively.
This memorandum is part of the EBRD’s strategy for responsible exploration and mining of critical raw materials. Recently approved by its shareholders, the bank's strategy focuses on increasing investment in the mining of critical raw materials essential for the green transition.
The EBRD emphasizes the importance of producing these raw materials in an environmentally sound, sustainable, resilient, and circular manner. These materials are crucial for manufacturing wind turbines, solar panels, lithium-ion and electric car batteries, traction motors, heat pumps, and similar equipment.
