The Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan has witnessed an uptick in exports to the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia, reaching $20.82mn in the last four months, marking a leap from the $5.46mn recorded in the previous year.
Under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan has been actively pursuing a foreign policy strategy characterized by pragmatic engagement and fostering robust partnerships across political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian spheres globally.
This approach, outlined in the "Uzbekistan-2030" strategy, stresses the importance of expanding ties with neighboring countries and fostering mutually beneficial relationships, particularly within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The growing cooperation between Uzbekistan and Russia shows the positive results of this approach, demonstrating a commitment to regional stability and prosperity.
Surkhandarya region, located in southern Uzbekistan, is spearheading efforts to enhance trade with Russia, particularly Tatarstan. Recent data highlights a surge in Surkhandarya's exports to Russia, featuring a diverse range of products such as silk, cotton, and agricultural goods, underscoring the region's economic versatility. In reciprocation, Surkhandarya imports commodities like batteries and wood products from Russia, bolstering bilateral trade relations.
The strengthening bond between Surkhandarya and Tatarstan goes beyond just economic trade. Delegations of regional leaders and businessmen have visited each other, promoting dialogue and signing beneficial agreements. Surkhandarya's participation in the "III Forum on Uzbekistan-Russia Interregional Cooperation" in Kazan, Russia, resulted in agreements worth $209.1mn.
The sharing of expertise has been a key aspect of these interactions. During a recent visit to Kazan, Surkhandarya officials learned about Tatarstan's management services, paving the way for similar projects in Surkhandarya. Similarly, Tatarstan showed interest in Surkhandarya's economic potential during President Rustam Minnikhanov's visit in March, discussing areas like oil processing, transportation, agriculture, and education.
Cultural exchange has also been prioritized as a means of fostering greater understanding and camaraderie between the two regions. Agreements have been reached to organize cultural events and facilitate the participation of delegations in festivals, further cementing the bonds of friendship.
The recent visit of a delegation from Tatarstan, led by Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Korobchenko, underscores the commitment of both sides to furthering cooperation and exploring new avenues of partnership. Discussions centered on the implementation of existing agreements and the identification of new projects, with an emphasis on mutual benefit and sustainable development.
