Turkmenistan has set its sights on establishing a bio-industry sector, spanning various domains of biotechnology, Turkmenportal reported.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has endorsed a decree greenlighting the State Program for the comprehensive development of biotechnology in Turkmenistan for the period 2024-2028. This initiative aims to roll out priority innovation and investment ventures while extensively scaling up production across all branches of the bio-industry spectrum, ranging from bio-pharmaceuticals to bio-chips.
The State Program envisions a multifaceted approach, harnessing the nation's scientific prowess to delve into numerous areas of biotechnology. Turkmenistan's Academy of Sciences is already spearheading research endeavors across myriad fields.
In bio-pharmaceuticals, there is a keen focus on exploring the medicinal properties inherent in local flora. Concurrently, strides are being made in food biotechnology, with endeavors aimed at fortifying foods and beverages. Agricultural biotechnology is also a key focus, with endeavors geared towards bolstering crop yields.
Scientists are actively engaged in pioneering work involving biosensors, bio-chips tailored for personalized medicine, as well as research into biofuels and biodegradable materials. Studies on microorganisms for soil bio-remediation are underway, showcasing Turkmenistan's burgeoning expertise in biotechnology, which is garnering global scientific interest.
The presidential decree further outlines a comprehensive plan of action to execute the State Program. This plan will be spearheaded by the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan in collaboration with pertinent ministries and departments.
The primary objective of this new directive is to seamlessly integrate scientific advancements into various sectors of the economy, thereby catalyzing the production of eco-friendly, energy-efficient, import-substituting, and export-oriented goods. Ultimately, this initiative aspires to nurture a competitive national bio-industry sector poised for success on the global stage.
