President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan signed a law to approve a $50 mn loan from the International Development Association, aimed at improving air quality in Kyrgyzstan. The law was signed on December 12, 2023, and approved by Parliament on April 18, 2024.
The $50 mn loan will fund several key projects to improve air quality. These projects include building and updating air quality monitoring stations and upgrading a chemical lab to test air quality. The loan will also provide technical help to improve air quality controls and develop methods to predict and prevent air pollution.
Additionally, the funds will encourage the use of clean heating technologies in homes and support the construction of irrigation systems to maintain green spaces in Bishkek.
The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision in Kyrgyzstan recently reported a 10-15% decrease in smog levels in Bishkek due to government efforts. Despite these improvements, Bishkek has often been listed among the most polluted cities in the world by IQAIR. This project aims to continue reducing air pollution and improve the overall air quality in Bishkek and other urban areas in Kyrgyzstan.
