Within the framework of the Asian Women's Forum, UN Women and the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan have inked a memorandum of understanding, solidifying their commitment to advancing gender equality and women's empowerment in the nation.
The memorandum sets the stage for multifaceted cooperation between UN Women and the Uzbek Ministry, outlining a comprehensive roadmap with several key objectives. Foremost among these is the integration of gender principles into the strategic management of state finances and budgetary legislation. Through expert consultations and legislative reinforcement, the partners aim to enhance the integration and monitoring processes crucial for promoting gender equality within fiscal frameworks.
Additionally, the memorandum seeks to facilitate knowledge exchange and learning opportunities on gender-responsive budgeting practices with other nations, amplifying Uzbekistan's role as a regional leader in promoting inclusive economic policies. It underscores the importance of incorporating gender considerations into the allocation criteria for state and local budget funds, ensuring equitable distribution and effective utilization of resources.
The agreement underscores a commitment to enhancing the accountability of public institutions in aligning national gender equality policies with corresponding budgetary allocations. By employing gender-responsive budgeting mechanisms, the partners aim to drive systemic change and foster a more inclusive and equitable society.
Uzbekistan's dedication to gender equality is further underscored by the Senate Resolution of the Oliy Majlis, dated May 28, 2021, which approved the Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality in Uzbekistan until 2030. This resolution mandates gender analysis of state and locally financed projects, integrating gender aspects into planning and implementation processes, and gradually adopting gender-responsive budgeting practices.
In alignment with these directives, the Ministry of Economy and Finance has forged a collaborative partnership with UN Women. This partnership builds upon the strides made under the country's gender equality strategy, including increased representation of women in leadership roles and expanded access to educational and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan, Jamshid Kuchkorov, reiterated Uzbekistan's commitment to gender equality, emphasizing equal rights and opportunities for women and men in societal and governmental affairs. Executive Director of UN Women, Sima Sami Bahous, commended Uzbekistan's efforts in employment and social protection, highlighting the importance of prioritizing economic empowerment initiatives for women.
