President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan joined world leaders in Moscow to honor the 79th anniversary of Victory Day on May 9, presidential press service reported. The president's practical visit to the Russian capital was at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin.
The commemorative events commenced with a grand Victory Parade held in Moscow's iconic Red Square. Alongside President Mirziyoyev stood dignitaries from various nations, including Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Guinea-Bissau, Laos, and Cuba, underscoring the global significance of this historic occasion.
Reflecting on Uzbekistan's pivotal role in World War II, President Mirziyoyev paid tribute to the immense sacrifices made by Uzbek soldiers and civilians. Despite facing formidable odds, over 1.95 mn Uzbeks courageously fought against fascism, with more than 538,000 sacrificing their lives on the battlefield. The president highlighted the remarkable contributions of Uzbek officers, including the emergence of numerous generals and skilled commanders during the conflict.
Uzbekistan's strategic importance as a supply base behind the frontlines was also emphasized, with the country dispatching vital resources and establishing over 170 factories to support the war effort. The President underscored the unparalleled humanitarian efforts of the Uzbek people, who welcomed over 1.5 mn displaced individuals, including 250,000 orphans, with open arms.
The enduring legacy of Uzbekistan's wartime contributions is celebrated through various initiatives, including annual honors for veterans and disabled individuals, and the establishment of the expansive Victory Park in Tashkent. Since its inception, over 2.2 mn visitors have paid their respects at this poignant memorial.
Following the commemorative events, President Mirziyoyev, alongside President Putin and fellow leaders, laid a wreath at the "Unknown Soldier" monument in Alexander Park. This solemn gesture honored the memory of millions of soldiers, including Uzbek heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their homeland.
As the ceremony concluded, the President bid farewell to Moscow, escorted by Russian officials including Deputy Chairman of the Government - Acting Minister of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov.
Earlier Daryo reported that President Mirziyoyev attended the anniversary gathering of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Moscow on May 8, representing Uzbekistan as an observer state. He was joined by leaders from member states like Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Cuba. The objective of the meeting was to discuss pressing matters concerning the broadening of multilateral trade and economic collaboration, backing industrial initiatives, and executing joint programs in key sectors.
