Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have made significant strides in improving water management in the Syr Darya and Amu Darya basins through mutual cooperation and agreements. The fourth meeting of the Uzbek-Turkmen intergovernmental joint commission on water management, held in Turkmenabad, underscored the commitment of both nations to further enhance their collaboration in this vital sector UzA reported on May 2.
Chaired by Sh. Ganiev, adviser to the President of Uzbekistan, and T. Atakhalliev, deputy chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan for issues of the agro-industrial complex, the event highlighted the warm and friendly relations between the two countries, paving the way for strengthened ties in water management.
A wise and forward-thinking policy has guided the management of transboundary water resources between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, characterized by friendship, good neighborliness, and respect for mutual interests.
Discussions at the meeting centered on the implementation of agreements reached during the third meeting of the Uzbek-Turkmen joint intergovernmental commission on water management.
The importance of introducing an automated water accounting system in Amu Darya was emphasized, with both parties expressing readiness to jointly implement projects in this regard, utilizing grant funds from international financial institutions.
Attention was also directed towards strengthening the banks of the Amu Darya, reducing water resource loss through channel bed leveling, and ensuring unobstructed water passage. An online meeting between the Turkmenistan State Water Management Scientific and Production Institute and Uzbekistan's Turmensuvilimtaslama project institute facilitated the exchange of experiences on flood prevention and shore strengthening measures. Suggestions were made to prevent potential dangerous situations along the Amu Darya, with specialists from both countries committing to addressing specific issues before the next meeting.
The meeting concluded with the signing of a corresponding report, affirming the decision to convene the fifth meeting of the Uzbek-Turkmen intergovernmental commission on water management issues in Uzbekistan.
