An agreement worth $293.5mn was inked between the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of the Integrated Rural Development Project on April 16, UNDP reported.
This agreement sets the stage for the construction and major renovation of vital social infrastructure in 157 mahallas across 21 districts spanning the regions of Samarkand, Kashkadarya, and Surkhandarya.
Building upon the success of the first phase, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, along with UNDP and with the financial backing of the Islamic Development Bank, is poised to launch the second phase of the Integrated Rural Development Project.
This phase is slated to span from 2024 to 2028, with a focus on enhancing the living standards of rural residents through comprehensive infrastructure improvements.
The overarching objective of the project is to bolster essential amenities and services in rural areas. This includes upgrading road and transportation networks, enhancing engineering and communication infrastructure, fortifying power supply systems, and implementing resource-efficient and eco-friendly technologies in the construction and renovation of key social facilities such as kindergartens, schools, and rural clinics.
A notable aspect of the project is its emphasis on community involvement and empowerment. Through the development of community development plans, local residents will have the opportunity to articulate their development priorities and needs. These plans will serve as the blueprint for the execution of construction and investment endeavors, ensuring that initiatives align closely with the requirements and aspirations of the communities they serve.
Since 2022, the project's first phase has aimed to improve rural living by building and renovating facilities in 170 mahallas across 20 districts in Karakalpakstan, Khorezm, Bukhara, and Navoi. It also provides skill training. Now, with locals involved, 900 projects are set for construction or renovation by 2025.
