On March 25, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev initiated the construction of three power facilities in the Namangan region, with a total investment of $1.1 bn and a combined capacity of 1.28 GW, the President’s Press Service reported. Currently, Namangan has a generating capacity of 913 MW, and with a 24% increase in electricity consumption over the past three years.
On the Naryn River in Uychi District, Uzbekhydroenergo is set to construct a cascade of six hydropower plants. With a $434 mn investment, the facility will have a 228 MW overall capacity. By producing 1 bn kWh of energy a year, these plants will power 430,000 households while conserving 310 mn cubic metres of gas. With 133 employees, this will be the first hydroelectric plant operated entirely within the country.
Hyper Partners, a German company, plans to construct a 500 MW solar power plant in Pap district. The project, valued at $350 mn, will have an annual capacity of over 1.09 bn kWh. In collaboration with Tepelen Group Holding from the UAE, another solar power plant will be built in Pape. This plant, also valued at $350 mn, will have a capacity of 500 MW. Both photovoltaic power plants are expected to be connected to the local grid by the end of this year.
Future projections
With these developments, the generating capacity of the Namangan region will reach 2.14 GW, and annual electricity production will hit 7.8 bn kWh. This will not only meet the region’s demand but also allow surplus electricity to be supplied to Andijan and Ferghana regions.
Next year, electricity storage systems with a total capacity of 200 MW are scheduled to be launched in the Pap and Uychi districts. This will help balance the unified energy system during periods of high consumption and ensure a stable electricity supply to consumers.
In 2024, as part of the construction of 14 solar and wind power plants, an additional 2.6 GW of capacity will be connected to the local grid.
