Uzbekistan recorded a significant uptick in gas exports during January and February 2024, totaling $26.7mn, the Uzbekistan Statistics Agency reports.
This figure represents a substantial increase compared to the corresponding period in 2023 when gas exports amounted to $7.4mn. The surge in gas exports underscores Uzbekistan's growing presence in the global energy market and its capacity to capitalize on export opportunities.
Heightened Import Activity
Conversely, Uzbekistan witnessed a notable rise in gas imports, with the country importing gas worth $166.7mn in the first two months of 2024. This marks a substantial increase compared to the same period last year when gas imports stood at $1.7mn. The surge in import activity reflects Uzbekistan's efforts to meet domestic demand amidst declining gas production levels.
Challenges in Gas Production
The report also highlights challenges facing Uzbekistan's gas production sector, with the volume of gas extraction witnessing a significant decline. In 2023, gas production in the country reached 46.7bn m³, marking the lowest production volume in the past seven years. The decline in gas production underscores the need for strategic interventions to address production constraints and ensure long-term sustainability in the energy sector.
