Kyrgyzstan holds negotiations with World Bank to advance sustainable development

The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic, Akylbek Zhaparov, recently met with a delegation of Executive Directors from the World Bank to discuss the implementation of vital country projects, the Cabinet of Ministers reported. The meeting, held at the Cabinet of Ministers, addressed key areas of economic development and sustainability for the Kyrgyz Republic.

Zhaparov began by emphasizing the government's commitment to boosting budget revenues and reducing the shadow economy. He highlighted three primary areas of focus for the country's new economic policy: energy, mining, and transport and transit industries.

In line with global environmental concerns, Zhaparov underscored the Kyrgyz Republic's dedication to combating climate change. He expressed readiness to make strides towards decarbonization and transitioning to green energy sources. The Chairman identified priority investment projects, including the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway and the Kambarata HPP-1.

A detailed presentation of the Kambarata HPP-1 construction project was provided to the World Bank representatives. The positive impact of this project on Central Asia's water and energy balance was highlighted, showcasing the government's commitment to regional stability and sustainable development.

Zhaparov also stressed the importance of ongoing reforms and institutional changes in the energy sector to bolster the country's energy security and independence. He called upon international institutions, including the World Bank, to extend support in these endeavors.

“The Cabinet of Ministers intends to continue reforms in the energy sector and institutional changes in order to strengthen the country’s energy security and independence. We call on international institutions to provide support in this direction,” Akylbek Zhaparov noted.

In response, the World Bank expressed gratitude for the comprehensive presentation and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Kyrgyz Republic. Emphasizing a holistic approach to water resource management and energy development, both parties acknowledged the necessity of sustainable and inclusive development for the region's prosperity.

The World Bank has actively engaged in supporting diverse projects and initiatives across various sectors in the Kyrgyz Republic, aiming to tackle development challenges and foster sustainable growth. Among the areas of investment are infrastructure development, encompassing enhancements in transportation, energy, and water supply systems, crucial for bolstering connectivity, economic advancement, and citizens' quality of life. Additionally, efforts have been directed toward improving access to essential social services such as healthcare and education, with initiatives focused on fortifying healthcare systems, expanding educational opportunities, and elevating service standards.

The upcoming five-year Country Partnership Framework (CPF) from 2024 to 2028 reflects a strategic alignment with the country's development goals, with a focus on energy, water, agriculture, and private sector investments. The CPF aims to address global challenges such as climate resilience, gender disparities, and economic transformation, demonstrating a commitment to fostering sustainable development and resilience in the Kyrgyz Republic.
