Zamirbek Mamasadykov, a member of the Jogorku Kenesh (the Kyrgyz Parliament), has voiced concerns over the environmental impact of a waste processing plant in Uzbekistan on several bordering Kyrgyz villages. The plant, located in the Namangan region of Uzbekistan, is reportedly causing significant environmental issues for the nearby Kyrgyz villages of Dostuk, Uch-Kurgon, and Shamaldy-Say.
According to Mamasadykov, a landfill has been in operation near the border for over 30 years. Recently, a waste processing plant was constructed adjacent to this landfill. The plant, which primarily operates during the night, is said to be severely affecting the environmental conditions of the aforementioned Kyrgyz villages.
The residents of these villages are reportedly forced to inhale polluted air due to the operations of the waste processing plant. This has led to frequent hospitalisations, particularly among children. Mamasadykov pointed out that the plant is situated merely 100 metres away from the settlements, a clear violation of regulations that mandate a minimum distance of three kilometres.
Mamasadykov concluded his statement by emphasising the need for diplomatic negotiations to resolve this cross-border environmental issue with Uzbekistan. He urged for immediate action to safeguard the health and well-being of the affected Kyrgyz villagers.
