The European Commission is poised to unveil its 13th package of sanctions against Russia, with diplomats indicating that the measures will not include any new import bans, Reuters reported. This decision comes as the proposal for the sanctions package nears its finalization, with the Commission and European Union member states aiming to swiftly implement the measures to coincide with the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
EU diplomats state that the forthcoming sanctions package will primarily focus on the inclusion of numerous entities and individuals on the sanctions list, with no major corporations targeted. The proposed measures are also expected to broaden the list of Russian companies to which EU firms are prohibited from selling dual-use goods. Dual-use goods are items that can have civilian applications but may also be utilized in military contexts to manufacture weapons like drones.
In previous rounds of sanctions, the EU has imposed bans on significant Russian imports, including sea-borne oil shipments and, more recently, diamonds. However, with the 13th sanctions package set to primarily focus on listing entities and individuals rather than imposing import bans, Brussels is signaling a cautious approach amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
