Taliban allocates $20.4 mn for fiscal year 2023 projects
In the fiscal year 2023, the Taliban's Ministry of Finance, despite being under UN sanctions for terrorist activities, saw an allocation of 1.5 bn Afghanis ($20.4 mn). The budget was directed towards several crucial projects aimed at modernizing administrative systems and enhancing infrastructure across the nation, Sputnik Afghanistan reported on February 4.
One of the noteworthy initiatives outlined in the allocated budget was the modernization of customs procedures. Another significant focus was the development of the national budget planning and execution system (SBPS).
Passport printing emerged as a priority, indicating the Taliban's interest in managing identity documentation. The allocation for providing technology and administrative equipment for revenue management highlights the Taliban's commitment to enhancing their fiscal capabilities.
Improving income systems was also identified as a key project, reflecting the Taliban's focus on bolstering economic stability and sustainability. The implementation of effective income systems is crucial for generating revenue to fund various government activities and public services. In a bid to address energy needs, the Taliban allocated resources for providing provinces with solar electricity.
Earlier Daryo reported that the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) by Transparency International has highlighted a troubling pattern in Afghanistan, revealing a substantial increase in corruption. Despite assertions from the Taliban-led government, in power since August 2021, that claimed credit for enhancing the nation's corruption ranking, the latest data contradicts these claims. Afghanistan experienced a notable decline of 12 positions in the corruption ranking for the year 2023.
