The latest 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) from Transparency International has brought attention to a concerning trend in Afghanistan, indicating a significant rise in corruption. The Taliban-led government, which assumed power in August 2021, has claimed credit for improvements in the country's corruption ranking. However, the reality appears more complex as in 2023 Afghanistan saw notable decrease of 12 places.

Afghanistan has grappled with corruption for more than a decade, consistently ranking among the world's most corrupt governments. The recent CPI reveals a notable drop of 12 places, placing Afghanistan at 162nd globally.
The Taliban has asserted that its rule has led to a reduction in bribery and extortion, particularly in certain public services. This claim aligns with the group's narrative of combating the corruption it had previously criticized in the U.S.-backed Afghan government. The CPI placed Taliban-ruled Afghanistan at 150th in 2022, showcasing an upgrade from its 174th ranking in 2021.
