    5.5 magnitude earthquake strikes Kyrgyzstan-China border

    On January 26, the Kyrgyz Institute of Seismology reported a series of earthquakes occurring on the border of Kyrgyzstan and China. The most significant was a magnitude 5.5 earthquake, preceded by a magnitude 4.5 earthquake earlier in the day.

    Details of earthquakes

    • The magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred at 15:03 local time (UTC+06:00).
    • Before this, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded at 6:37 local time (UTC+06:00).
    • The epicentre of the tremors was located in China, in the same area where a powerful magnitude 7 earthquake occurred on January 23.
    • These tremors were also felt in Kyrgyzstan, with the intensity of the vibrations ranging from 3 to 4 points in the nearest Kyrgyz settlements to the epicentre.

    Aftershocks 

    Seismologists have identified the epicentre of recent tremors in China, coinciding with the location of a powerful magnitude 7 earthquake that struck on January 23, as earlier reported by Daryo. This seismic event occurred at 00:09 local time (UTC+06:00) and was succeeded by approximately ten aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 3 to 6. In the subsequent days, the area continued to experience seismic activity, with around 30 additional sensitive earthquakes recorded, reaching magnitudes of up to 5.7. 

    According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic, there were no casualties or destruction due to the tremors on the territory of Kyrgyzstan.
