A monument dedicated to the renowned scientist Abu Rayhan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Beruni has been unveiled in the U.S. capital, Nigoh reports.
Who is Abu Rayhan Beruni?
Abu Rayhan Beruni, a polymath of the Islamic Golden Age, made significant contributions to various fields of study. He authored encyclopedic works on history, geography, philology, astronomy, mathematics, geodesy, mineralogy, pharmacology, geology, and many other subjects. Beruni was the first person in the Middle East to propose that the Earth could revolve around the Sun. He also determined the size of the Earth’s circumference.
The Unveiling Ceremony
The unveiling ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests. Among them were Furkat Sidikov, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the United States, and Frederick Starr, the Chairman of the Institute of Central Asia and the Caucasus at Johns Hopkins University. Starr is also the author of the book “The Genius of His Time”, which is dedicated to Beruni and Avicenna.

Furkat Sidikov, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the United States, presented his credentials to U.S. President Joe Biden in May 2023. Prior to his appointment as ambassador, Sidikov served as the First Deputy Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan.
