Current water resource management strategies
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has recently examined proposals aimed at optimizing water resource utilization in Uzbekistan, with a focus on improving water efficiency in agriculture. Recognizing the urgency of addressing water scarcity, the government is actively taking steps to transform water management and promote sustainable agricultural practices, as reported by the governmental portal.
Uzbekistan has made notable progress in the adoption of water-saving technologies. This includes the conversion of 472,000 hectares to drip irrigation, 48,000 hectares to sprinkler irrigation, and 97,000 hectares incorporating various water-efficient techniques. The implementation of laser leveling on 649,000 hectares of land has led to significant water savings. In 2023 alone, these initiatives resulted in a remarkable conservation of 2 bn cubic meters of water, equivalent to the annual consumption of the entire Bukhara region.
