The Ministry of Agriculture has announced the successful initiation of tropical fruit cultivation in the Bulungur district of the Samarkand region.
A resident of the Sarkipchak microdistrict has pioneered the growth of lemons and bananas in greenhouse conditions, yielding a remarkable 400kg of bananas, which were subsequently sold for UZS 15mn ($1,216). The farmer has planted 50 banana trees, marking a promising venture into exotic fruit farming.
In a parallel initiative back in 2018, an ambitious project was launched in the Andijan region, aiming for the industrial-scale cultivation of bananas and tomatoes.
Uzbekistan, traditionally not known for banana cultivation, has seen a notable rise in banana imports, amounting to $85.2mn in 11M 2023. The recent local efforts to grow bananas within the country carry potential significance for diversifying agriculture, boosting income for farmers, and diminishing reliance on imported fruits.
The cultivation of bananas and other exotic fruits at an industrial level can prove pivotal in reducing the need for external imports, thereby bolstering self-sufficiency. Additionally, such agricultural projects have the potential to generate new employment opportunities, contributing to overall economic growth in the region.
