Importers in different countries of the world, including the CIS countries, were warned about interruptions in the supply of bananas from Ecuador, where the drug mafia has been fighting the state for a week, Megapolis reports.
The selling price for a box of bananas from major suppliers has already increased by $3 - from $19 to $22 (and will continue to rise). As per the forecasts, banana prices will rise by 30-40% in about a month.
Notably, the average price for bananas in large supermarket chains in Uzbekistan has already jumped and is now about UZS 28,000 per 1kg ($2.25 per 1kg).
Among the earlier developments, the President of Uzbekistan has prolonged the zero import customs duty on specific food products until January 1, 2025. The assortment of goods includes by-products of cattle, fish, milk, cream, butter, eggs, bananas, citrus fruits, other fruits, onions, certain vegetables, coffee, tea, vegetable oils, flour, cereals, pasta, water, hair products, children’s clothing, and more.
Earlier, it was reported that in 2023, Uzbekistan imported about 120,000 tons of bananas, valued at $85.2mn. This import activity marks a significant economic event, given the country’s increasing demand for this tropical fruit. Ecuador emerged as the primary supplier, contributing 117,500 tons to the total import.
