The First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Bakhromjon Aloyev, held a crucial meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Uzbekistan, Saeed AlQemzi, on January 11, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan reported.
The discussions focused on various facets of the Uzbekistan – UAE cooperation, covering political dimensions, trade and investment, transport and logistics, culture and tourism, and collaboration on international platforms. The meeting also included an exchange of views on the upcoming joint events scheduled at different levels.
Diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and the UAE were established in October 1992, with the opening of the General Consulate of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Dubai in the same year. The Embassy of Uzbekistan in the UAE began its operations in Abu Dhabi in 2007, further strengthening bilateral ties. Notably, the UAE's decision in June 2004 to open a General Consulate in Uzbekistan, later converted into an Embassy in June 2010, underscored the commitment to fostering deeper relations.
Over the years, Uzbekistan and the UAE have witnessed significant growth in their bilateral relations, encompassing political, trade, economic, and environmental cooperation. The meeting highlighted the importance of expanding inter-parliamentary dialogue to consolidate these ties further.
A noteworthy aspect of this growing partnership is the substantial increase in mutual trade. In the period from January to September 2023, the trade volume reached $475.7mn, indicating a remarkable 40% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This surge in mutual trade serves as a testament to the strengthening of economic bonds between the two countries.
UAE investments in Uzbekistan have also experienced substantial growth, with the number of enterprises involving UAE participation increasing by 2.5 times over the past five years. The green portfolio, which includes investment projects in energy, agriculture, transport and logistics, and tourism infrastructure, has now surpassed $4bn.
Furthermore, in December 2023, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan met with a high-profile delegation from the UAE during his practical visit to the country. The delegation, led by the Minister of Investment and CEO of the "ADQ" holding, Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, engaged in crucial discussions aimed at enhancing trade, economic, and investment cooperation between the two nations. Additionally, President Mirziyoyev participated in a strategic discussion with Ahmed Al-Shamsi, Chief Executive Officer of the UAE-based company “Sustainable Water Solutions” (SWS).
