The delegation of Uzbekistan has been in negotiations with several official agencies in Saudi Arabia. These discussions aim to improve the quality of Hajj and Umrah services, reduce their prices, and create additional facilities for pilgrims, the press service of the Muslim Office reports.
Significant price reduction
As a result of these dialogues, the price of Umrah services has seen a significant reduction. Starting from January 10, 2024, the price of Umrah services at the “Hajj and Umrah” centre of the Office of Muslims of Uzbekistan has been set at UZS 16.6 mn ($1,346) per person.
Umrah statistics
According to the General Authority for Statistics, the total number of Umrah performers in 2022 reached 24.7 mn. This included 9.5 mn pilgrims who performed Umrah for one time. The total number of external Umrah performers reached 8.4 mn, where males accounted for 44.20%, and females represented 55.80%.
Impact on Uzbekistan
The impact of this price reduction on the Muslim population of Uzbekistan, which is estimated to be around 96%, could be significant. It may enable more people to undertake this important religious journey, thereby strengthening their faith and contributing to the spiritual well-being of the community.
Earlier, Daryo reported that the Tashkent City Tourism Development Department has revoked the licenses of six firms engaged in arranging the Umrah pilgrimage.
Following a government ruling that came into effect on November 1, 2023, only local tour operators holding a specific license are permitted to coordinate these journeys. The committee had earlier directed 23 companies, which were conducting the Umrah without a license, to correct the noted deficiencies. However, the six companies in question were unable to comply within the given timeframe, resulting in the suspension of their licenses.
