The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, Muzaffar Madrahimov, convened a crucial meeting with Nigina Abaszadeh, regional advisor of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Uzbekistan, on January 4. The meeting aimed to assess the current state of cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNFPA and explore avenues for further development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan reported.
During the meeting, both parties engaged in substantive discussions concerning a range of topics, including ongoing collaborative projects and potential areas for expansion. Key issues included health care, gender equality, demography, and support for youth initiatives. The discussions also touched upon the activation of mutual cooperation to address priority tasks outlined in the "Uzbekistan - 2030" strategy.
Uzbekistan stands out as the most populous country in Central Asia, with a population exceeding 35 mn. Notably, nearly 40% of the population is comprised of children under the age of 15, and two-thirds are youth under the age of 24. The government has been proactively working towards advancing reproductive and maternal health, ensuring access to family planning information and services, and promoting youth-friendly health services.
The UNFPA has played a pivotal role in supporting Uzbekistan's initiatives since establishing its Country Office in 1993. Currently implementing its fifth Country Programme for the period of 2021-2025, the UNFPA focuses on key strategic objectives:
- Promoting Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights: Advocating for and supporting initiatives related to sexual reproductive health and rights.
- Ensuring Equal Rights and Opportunities: Combating gender-based violence and working towards the realization of equal rights for men and women.
- Linking Population Dynamics and Development: Exploring the interplay between population dynamics and the broader development goals of the country.
- Working with Adolescents and Youth: Addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by Uzbekistan's youth population.
