WHO urges wearing masks due to rising incidence of COVID-19

As the global community faces a surge in COVID-19 cases, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, is urging continued adherence to preventive measures, including the wearing of masks and vaccinations. In a recent social media post, Ghebreyesus emphasized the concerning increase in respiratory illnesses caused by COVID-19, influenza, and other pathogens worldwide, particularly following recent holidays.

    The WHO's Call for Vigilance

"The number of respiratory illnesses caused by COVID-19, influenza and other pathogens has been increasing in many countries for several weeks and is expected to continue after the recent holidays," Ghebreyesus wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Emphasis on Testing and Medical Help

Ghebreyesus not only stressed the importance of wearing masks and getting vaccinated but also highlighted the critical role of testing and seeking medical help when necessary. His message to the public includes a plea for increased COVID-19 testing and a prompt response from individuals who may experience symptoms, emphasizing the significance of early detection and treatment.

    Government Responsibilities

"To governments: ensure access to reliable tests, treatments, and vaccines, especially for those most at risk of severe infection," Ghebreyesus added.

This call to action directs governments to prioritize accessibility to essential resources for their populations, particularly for those vulnerable to severe illness. The WHO's recommendation emphasizes the collective responsibility of governments in safeguarding public health.

    Concerns About Virus Mutations

Additionally, Ghebreyesus cautioned authorities worldwide to be vigilant regarding possible mutations of the virus. The evolving nature of the virus raises concerns about its ability to adapt, potentially affecting the efficacy of existing preventive measures and vaccines. The WHO's emphasis on monitoring and addressing virus mutations underscores the need for a proactive approach to stay ahead of the evolving threat.

    Recent Global COVID-19 Statistics

According to the latest WHO report, covering the period from November 20 to December 17, 2023, the global number of new coronavirus cases increased by 52% compared to the previous month, reaching a total of 850 thousand cases. This data highlights the urgency of the situation and reinforces the WHO's call for increased vigilance and adherence to preventive measures.
