Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has emphasized the importance of enacting laws that will catalyze the country’s socioeconomic transformation, The Astana Times reports. This call to action was made during a meeting with Yerlan Koshanov, the Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the lower house of the Parliament.
Legislative progress
Since the commencement of the session, the Mazhilis have adopted and forwarded 35 laws to the Senate, the upper house of the Parliament. These laws encompass a wide range of areas, including the implementation of the National Fund for Children program, subsoil use, business, mentoring, child safety, and special payments for employees working under hazardous conditions.
Ongoing legislative efforts
The Mazhilis are currently deliberating on 69 draft laws, a third of which were initiated by the deputies themselves. Among these are laws about the Budget Code, reduction of the population’s debt load, housing policy, government procurement, science and technology policy, consumer protection, heat power engineering, mass media, and combating human trafficking.
Parliamentary hearings and government meetings
The Mazhilis have conducted parliamentary hearings to enhance the financial literacy of the population. Government meetings have also been held to discuss the state of the health insurance system, strategies to combat drug crime, and the development of trade policy.
Regional visits
Deputies have made visits to various regions since the start of the year to engage with the public and oversee the implementation of the President’s directives aimed at improving the lives of the citizens.
President’s Commendation
President Tokayev lauded the work of the Mazhilis in 2023. He noted that the laws enacted have had a direct and positive impact on enhancing the quality of life of the citizens.
