Uzbekistan Country Climate and Development Report by the World Bank shows that significant transformations are anticipated in the country's power sector, with the share in total energy consumption projected to surge from 16% in 2019 to a substantial 55% by 2060, Trend News Agency reported.
The report underscores the pivotal role of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power, in shaping Uzbekistan's energy landscape. Analysts anticipate a noteworthy increase in investments in renewable energy sources by 2060, marking a strategic shift in the country's energy mix. In 2019, the power sector contributed 42% of energy sector emissions, and the forecasted growth indicates that it will experience the most significant sectoral expansion.
This ambitious scenario aligns with global efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060, emphasizing Uzbekistan's commitment to sustainable and cleaner energy practices.
Among the various renewable sources, solar and wind energy emerge as frontrunners, with a substantial potential of 39 GW in solar and wind capacity combined by 2035. The report highlights the vast untapped potential in these renewable resources, positioning them as key drivers in Uzbekistan's energy transition journey.
Hydropower is also slated for growth, with a projected capacity of 3.4 GW by 2035. Additionally, other renewable sources such as geothermal and biomass are recognized for their potential contributions, with theoretical capacities of 1 GW and 15–17 GW, respectively, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The World Bank analysts emphasize that by 2050, power exports are anticipated to peak at 9% of generation, while imports are expected to reach 4% in the reference scenario. This strategic balance in energy trade is envisioned to support Uzbekistan's integration of solar and wind generation, leveraging imports for stability and enabling the utilization of hydropower and thermal generation from neighboring countries.
Earlier Daryo reported that Uzbekistan is set to expand its green energy sector by introducing an extra 3.5GW of renewable energy capacity, in line with the global push for sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources.
