In a recent interview with “Kazinform”, Aibek Smadiarov, the official representative of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that the Kazakhstani authorities have decided to exclude the Taliban Islamist movement, operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan, from the list of banned organizations.
Smadiarov stressed that Kazakhstan regularly updates the national list of terrorist organizations banned in the country.
“As part of the above process, a decision was made to exclude the ‘Taliban Movement’ from it per the UN practice. Thus, according to the resolutions of the UN Security Council, which are binding, the Taliban Movement is not included in the lists of organizations recognized by the UN Security Council as terrorist organizations,” the Kazakh diplomat explained.
Looking ahead
In further political contacts, Astana will “strictly adhere” to the line of the UN Security Council and UN General Assembly, Smadiarov said. This decision marks a significant shift in Kazakhstan’s policy towards the Taliban, reflecting the changing geopolitical dynamics in the region.
