An 84-year-old Austrian citizen, Herbert Fritz, who arrived in Kabul in May to share a positive perspective on the security and peace situation under Taliban control, is now at risk of execution, Austria's Hewitt magazine reports.
Herbert Fritz was initially detained in May 2023, shortly after he ventured to Kabul to provide insights into the security and peace conditions prevailing in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Presently, he is being held in what has been described as "poor conditions" within one of the Taliban's prisons.
The arrest occurred a few weeks after Herbert Fritz authored an article titled "Traveling with the Taliban," published in an Austrian magazine. In the piece, he expressed a favorable outlook on life in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. However, Taliban officials have accused him of espionage.
Known for his interest in visiting challenging locations worldwide, Herbert had previously traveled to Afghanistan in 1980, exploring various parts of the country. In recent years, he journeyed to northern Syria to meet Kurds engaged in the fight against ISIS.
Concerned about Herbert's well-being, his family is urging the Austrian government to intervene, emphasizing his deafness. It is worth noting that the Austrian government had previously issued warnings to its citizens about the hazards associated with traveling to Afghanistan. The situation raises serious concerns about the safety of individuals expressing views that may be perceived as supportive of the Taliban in the current political climate.
