In a recent government meeting in Tajikistan, President Emomali Rahmon chaired discussions that covered key aspects of the nation's economic and cultural landscape. The meeting marked the first presentation of the medium-term Strategy for managing Tajikistan's public debt for the years 2024-2026, Sputnik Tajikistan reported.
Minister of Finance Fayziddin Kakhkhorzoda presented a report highlighting the strategy's focus on meeting government financing needs through the judicious use of loan funds. The overarching goal is to secure financial resources with the lowest costs in the medium and long term, considering reasonable risk levels. Additionally, the strategy aims to organize and maintain functional support for the securities market.
President Rahmon, after reviewing the strategy, directed its approval and instructed the Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with relevant ministries and departments, to undertake necessary measures for its implementation.
The government meeting also delved into cultural development, with discussions on the State Program for the Development of Theater Arts in Tajikistan for the years 2024-2028. The importance of nurturing cultural endeavors and promoting artistic expression was underscored in the context of this program.
Furthermore, the Government Work Plan for the first half of 2024 was presented and discussed, covering a range of issues related to the country's economic landscape. Key topics included the development of production and processing in the cotton and textile industries, along with plans for attracting foreign capital into the nation's economy.
Environmental concerns were also on the agenda, with a specific focus on cleanliness, landscaping, and protection in streets and residential areas. The Environmental Protection Committee, Forestry Agency, as well as regional, city, and district authorities were tasked with ensuring adherence to environmental standards. Special emphasis was placed on planting trees along designated routes, following proper technology for growing ornamental and shady seedlings.
President Rahmon issued directives for ensuring the quality of the winter period of 2023-2024, including measures to enhance fire safety across the country.
Tajikistan is contending with a considerable external debt, amounting to $6.7 bn. The World Bank's International Debt Report 2023 underscores the noteworthy nature of this amount, signifying the substantial financial commitments Tajikistan holds on an international scale. Examining external debt as a percentage of exports (121%) and Gross National Income (GNI) (55%) provides valuable indicators of the country's economic well-being.
