The Taliban has reportedly apprehended five of its Uzbek commanders in Takhar, on suspicion of their affiliation with the ISIS group. As per a report by Daryo correspondents citing the Aamaj News Agency, local sources in Takhar have disclosed that the arrests occurred in the Dasht Qala district of the region.
Among those arrested are Qari Hamas, who holds the position of the Taliban's head of health, and Qari Qudrat, serving as the Taliban's head of education in the Dasht Qala district. The Taliban's actions suggest a growing concern over infiltration by rival extremist groups, especially ISIS, in the region.
ISIS Resurgence in Afghanistan
Since the resurgence of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan, ISIS has intensified its operations and claimed responsibility for several deadly attacks in various cities across the country. This includes Kabul, Kunduz, Pul-i-Khumri, and Kandahar. The group's activities pose a significant security challenge for the Taliban, which is striving to consolidate its power and establish stability in the war-torn country.
While it is unclear how long the Uzbek commanders had been associated with ISIS, their arrests indicate the Taliban's efforts to root out suspected collaborators within its ranks and thwart any attempts by ISIS to expand its influence in the region.
Taliban's Struggle for Control
The Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan led to concerns about the country's security situation. The group has been facing numerous challenges, including efforts to maintain order, control, and counter the growing threat of ISIS. The situation in Takhar and other regions of Afghanistan remains fluid as various factions vie for influence, and the population hopes for stability and a return to normalcy.
