On December 21, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan hosted Ambassador Oleg Malginov from the Russian Federation, where Uzbekistan officials expressed deep concern over statements made by Zakhar Prilepin, the co-chairman of the Russian political party "A Just Russia - For Truth."
Prilepin's proposal to annex Uzbekistan's territory to Russia, conveyed during a conference at the press center "Russia Today," was received with unease by Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan, represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed that Prilepin's statements, widely circulated in Russian media, are deemed rash and provocative. They emphasized that such remarks from the leader of a political party in a traditionally friendly country like Russia do not align with the spirit of the comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance shared between Uzbekistan and the Russian Federation.
Ambassador Oleg Malginov, responding to the concerns, assured Uzbekistan that Prilepin's statements are in no way reflective of the official stance of the Russian Federation. He underlined that the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Uzbekistan have never been questioned by the Russian leadership.
The Russian Ambassador asserted his commitment to maintaining the strong and friendly relations between the two nations. He conveyed that the Russian Foreign Ministry plans to provide an official comment on the incident in the near future.
Earlier Daryo reported that Prilepin suggested a simple solution to potential migration-related conflicts: boost the Russian population. He claimed that increasing the number of Russians would lead to fewer issues with misbehaving individuals. Additionally, he proposed annexing territories from which guest workers travel to Russia.
