Uzbekistan's Prime Minister, Abdulla Aripov, along with Abdulaziz Al Obaidli from Masdar Company, inspected the construction progress of Central Asia's largest wind power plant in Zarafshan.
Expected to be operational in 2024, the 500MW facility will power 500,000 households, saving 1.1mn tons of hydrocarbon fuels annually.
This venture aligns with Uzbekistan's commitment to renewable energy and signifies a significant step towards cleaner and sustainable practices in the region.
Earlier Daryo reported two companies participated in the tender, and ACWA Power secured the bid by proposing a rate of $4.09 per kWh for combined electricity generation and storage, surpassing Masdar's offer of $4.99. The quoted price covers both services instead of separate charges for electricity generation and storage.
In June 2020, Masdar inked a deal with Uzbekistan's Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade and JSC National Electric Grid to construct and manage a 500MW wind farm in the Navoi region. The Zarafshan Wind Farm, anticipated to power 500,000 homes, reached a milestone in November 2023 with the energization of its substation and the commencement of around 25MW of renewable energy generation. Once fully operational, the project will annually offset 1.1mn tons of carbon dioxide. Masdar is spearheading the development, construction, and operation of this pioneering wind project, marking a significant stride in Uzbekistan's renewable energy landscape.
