In a historic turn, Uzbek journalist Inobat Akhatova has won the first case of gender discrimination in Uzbekistan. The incident occurred at a cafe on the Ankhora embankment, where the owner refused service to Akhatova and her friend after 10 p.m., citing his belief that women shouldn't be in his establishment during those hours.

Akhatova, a staunch advocate for gender equality, took the matter to court. The Shaikhantur court found the cafe owner guilty under Article 189(2) of the Administrative Code, punishing public gender discrimination. He now faces a fine of UZS 6.6mn ($537.40) in the first-ever application of this article in Uzbekistan.
The case sparks discussions on gender equality in Uzbekistan, anticipating increased awareness and legal actions against discrimination.
Earlier Daryo reported that New statistics from Uzbekistan's Statistics Agency indicate a noteworthy rise in the net income of small enterprises and micro-firms led by female managers. As of January 1, 2023, these businesses contributed to substantial economic growth, generating a net income of UZS 31.8 trillion (equivalent to over $2.6bn).
