In the latest English language Proficiency Index by EF (Education First), Uzbekistan has been positioned at 93 out of 113 ranks. The study, which engaged 2.2mn participants worldwide, relied on results from the free online language proficiency test, EF Standard English Test, conducted in 2023.
Notably, Uzbekistan has slipped four places compared to the previous year's ranking. The report highlights that the proficiency level in the Fergana and Andijan regions was particularly low, with the lowest level recorded across all other regions and cities in the country.
"English proficiency in Central Asia is low and stable, with higher-than-average gender gaps in favor of men in almost every country," concludes the report.
Central Asian neighbors also found their spots in the ranking:
- Kyrgyzstan secured the 90th position,
- Kazakhstan ranked 104th,
- Tajikistan landed at 112th,
- Turkmenistan did not appear on the list.
Afghanistan's ranking was better than all Central Asian countries' — the country secured 88th place.
Among all CA countries and Afghanistan, only Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan's ranks show a positive trend, while other states' EPI displays a negative trend.
At the top of the ranking, leading in English proficiency, were the Netherlands, Singapore, and Austria. The Democratic Republic of the Congo rounded out the list, taking the lowest position.
