The President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov, touched down in Paris on November 9 at Charles de Gaulle International Airport, marking the beginning of a significant working visit to the French capital.
President Japarov's visit is multifaceted, encompassing participation in the "One Planet Summit" as part of the Paris Peace Forum and attendance at the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference. The summit is a critical platform for global leaders to address environmental challenges and sustainable development.
In addition to his participation in these international forums, President Japarov is slated to engage in several bilateral meetings, aiming to strengthen diplomatic ties between Kyrgyzstan and France.
Relationship between Kyrgyzstan and France
The political relationship between the two nations has a history dating back to the early 1990s. Notably, a bilateral Treaty of Friendship, Understanding, and Cooperation was signed in June 1994, shortly after Kyrgyzstan gained independence. Since then, diplomatic relations have evolved, with the establishment of a French air detachment in Bishkek in 2001 to support military operations in Afghanistan. The Kyrgyz capital saw the opening of a diplomatic representation in 2004, later upgraded to a fully-fledged embassy in December 2009.
Recent diplomatic efforts highlight a growing emphasis on economic collaboration, particularly in the energy sector. A pivotal development occurred earlier, with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, Aibek Moldogaziev, convening a meeting with key figures such as Pierre-Paul Antonissance, representative of "Electricite de France (EDF)," and François Delahousse, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of France.
The discussions, held in Bishkek, revolved around reinforcing economic ties, particularly in the energy sector. "Electricite de France (EDF)," a major state-owned power generation company, expressed a keen interest in collaborative ventures in Kyrgyzstan. This move signals a potential milestone in the energy landscape of the Central Asian nation. The meeting focused on outlining the future course of action and identifying key areas for cooperation.
