Kyrgyzstan allocates $7mn for Qambarota HPP construction preparation

The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan has allocated 621.4mn soms, equivalent to approximately $7mn, from its 2024 republican budget project. Project Overview

The Kambarata Hydroelectric Power Station, a flagship infrastructure project for Kyrgyzstan, is poised to become a cornerstone of the nation's energy strategy. With a planned capacity of an impressive 1860 megawatts, the hydroelectric power station is expected to generate a remarkable 5bn kilowatt hours of electricity annually. The completion of this project will be a significant step toward meeting the growing energy demands of the region.

    Status of the Project

As of the end of August, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Bakit Toroboyev, reported significant progress in the preparatory phase of the Kambarata HPP-1. Key achievements include:

    1. Road Construction: Access roads to the construction site have been successfully completed, ensuring seamless transportation of materials and personnel to the project area.

    2. Substation Commissioning: A critical substation has been commissioned, enabling efficient electricity distribution from the future hydroelectric power station.

    3. Power Lines and Tunnels: Substantial headway has been made in the construction of power lines and tunnels, vital components for transmitting electricity and managing the infrastructure of the project.

    Investment and Ownership Structure

Analysts estimate that the total cost of the Kambarata Hydroelectric Power Station project will range between $4 to $5bn, emphasizing the magnitude of this undertaking. The allocation of funds from Kyrgyzstan's budget signifies a significant step in securing the necessary financing for this ambitious venture.

Upon its completion, the ownership structure is expected to be divided as follows:

    • Kyrgyzstan: 34%
    • Kazakhstan: 33%
    • Uzbekistan: 33%

The construction of the Kambarata Hydroelectric Power Station is on track to conclude by the end of 2025.
