The Saudi Development Fund has pledged $100mn for the construction of the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) in Tajikistan, as per the Saudi Ambassador in Dushanbe, Walid bin Abdurrahman al-Rishaidan, TASS reports.
This funding amounts to 50% of all the financial assistance provided by the fund to Tajikistan since 2002. Ambassador al-Rishaidan emphasized that the Rogun HPP, the region's most extensive project, will play a pivotal role in the sustainable development of the nation by harnessing natural resources, including clean energy.
Of the $195mn committed by the Saudi Development Fund, $95mn has been designated for the education sector in Tajikistan. This includes a recent $20mn agreement signed in October 2023 between Tajikistan's Ministry of Finance and the foundation for the "Construction and Equipping of Schools in Tajikistan" project.
Tajikistan's Minister of Energy stated that around $5bn are required for the full operation of the Rogun HPP. Thus far, an estimated $3.3bn, equivalent to TJS 40bn, has been invested in the construction of this hydropower plant.
The Rogun HPP, situated 110km from Dushanbe on the Vakhsh River, is the largest in the region. Although construction initially began in 1976, it was halted after the dissolution of the USSR. Subsequently, Tajikistan resumed construction on the hydroelectric station, and two out of the planned six units, each with a capacity of 600MW, have been put into operation.
Between 2008 and 2021, approximately $3bn was allocated from Tajikistan's budget and other sources for the reconstruction, construction, and installation of the Rogun HPP. Upon completion, the plant will generate 3.6GW of power, and its dam will be the world's tallest, reaching a height of 335m.
