Public outrage against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is escalating, with protestors gathering near his residence in Jerusalem on November 4, 2023. The demonstration was a response to the perceived failures that led to last month’s deadly attack by Hamas gunmen on communities around the Gaza Strip.
The crowd, numbering in the hundreds and waving blue and white Israeli flags, chanted “Jail now!” as they pushed through police barriers surrounding Netanyahu’s residence. This protest aligns with recent poll results indicating that over three-quarters of Israelis believe Netanyahu should resign.
Netanyahu has yet to accept personal responsibility for the surprise assault on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 people and the capture of at least 240 hostages. As the initial shock subsides, public anger is growing, with many families of the hostages criticizing the government’s response.
In Tel Aviv, thousands demonstrated, demanding the immediate release of the hostages. Since the attack, Israel has launched an intense offensive in Gaza, resulting in over 9,000 casualties and widespread destruction.
Even before the conflict, Netanyahu was a contentious figure due to corruption charges and a controversial plan to curb judicial powers. A recent poll found that 76% of Israelis believe Netanyahu should resign, with 64% advocating for immediate elections post-war. When asked who was most to blame for the attack, 44% of Israelis pointed to Netanyahu.
