The Balkan Shipyard in Turkmenbashi has signed a $42mn contract with the Korean Marine Equipment Association (KOMEA), according to the Transport and Communications Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.
The contract covers the design and joint construction of Multi Purpose Carrier class vessels with a displacement of 6,100 tonnes.
"These multipurpose vessels are capable of carrying both bulk cargo and containers, and their characteristics are most suitable for the waters of the Caspian Sea, the Volga and Don rivers, and the Black Sea."
"Balkan" was commissioned in 2018 and has the capacity to build up to six vessels a year, including oil tankers, offshore platforms, trailers and boats.
In the future, it is planned to build vessels of various classes and types. These include "RO-RO" ferries for the transport of wheeled vehicles (cars, trucks, trailers).
The technological lines of the plant allow processing 10 thousand tonnes of steel per year. The plant with a total area of 166,000 square metres was built by the Turkish company "Gap Inşaat".
With the introduction of an additional international seaport in the city of Turkmenbashi, optimal opportunities have been created for the shipment of goods arriving along the route of the Great Silk Road from Asia and the Pacific, and then to European countries via the ports of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.
