On October 28, Türkiye's Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, held a press conference to mark the annual Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayramı) celebration that is observed in the transcontinental country on October 29. During the event, Ambassador Olgan Bekar provided a vivid insight into the historical significance of Türkiye's national holiday and its origins.
In particular, Olgan Bekar highlighted the Ottoman Empire's involvement in World War I, which began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. Despite their participation in the war, the Ottoman Empire experienced a defeat that led to the occupation of some of their territories by foreign powers. But, with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's leadership, the Turkish people began a struggle for independence that culminated in the defeat of the powerful states of the time and the liberation of their country. Bekar also expressed his appreciation for the people of Bukhara in Uzbekistan, who came to Türkiye's aid during their fight for independence.
Moreover, Olgan Bekar emphasized the extensive reforms and modernization that were implemented after the establishment of the republic. He remarked that Türkiye's citizens, determined to make revolutionary changes, relied heavily on the 700-year heritage of the Ottoman state and the traditions of statehood dating back to centuries past.
This year marks the centenary of the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, which is a significant occasion. It has been a hundred years since its inception, and the Republic of Türkiye has made remarkable progress from its initial state. It is important to remember and pay tribute to those who founded our Republic and honour their legacy. Our Republic has been on the path of development and modernization since its inception, aiming to create a modern Turkish nation. The current level of progress of our nation is a testament to the correctness of the path laid out by our founders,
Ambassador Olgan Bekar told Daryo correspondent. He also mentioned that Türkiye has been taking decisive steps to strengthen its position in the world community since 2003, under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Olgan Bekar concluded by noting that Uzbekistan also widely celebrates the 100th anniversary of Republic Day, highlighting how the establishment of the Turkish Republic has had a positive impact on other countries.
