According to a statement from the lower house of parliament's press service, lawmakers of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis have approved bills for the ratification of several international agreements.
These agreements include:
1. A pact between Uzbekistan and Italy on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
2. An agreement between Uzbekistan and Italy on the transfer of sentenced persons.
3. An accord between Uzbekistan and Italy on extradition.
4. An agreement between Uzbekistan and Iran on the transfer of sentenced persons.
5. An agreement between Uzbekistan and Vietnam on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
These legislative actions signify Uzbekistan's commitment to enhancing international cooperation on legal matters with these countries.
Earlier, Daryo reported that the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights conducted a press conference to discuss the preliminary results of early presidential elections in Uzbekistan. The conference primarily focused on the safe conduct of electoral processes across different regions, measures taken to prevent violations, and the establishment of polling stations in correctional facilities. Unlike previous elections, legislative amendments introduced in 2023 allowed convicts serving sentences for serious and particularly serious crimes to participate in the elections for the first time this year.
It was revealed that 33,753 individuals in custody had the right to vote in the elections, and 48 polling stations were set up in correctional facilities and detention centers to facilitate their participation. Furthermore, various events involving guardians of candidates with convicts in custody were organized during the campaign to ensure the full exercise of their voting rights.
The text also briefly mentions criminal disenfranchisement in the United States and how it varies from state to state, with some states automatically restoring voting rights for formerly incarcerated individuals while others require standard re-registration processes.
