President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov held a significant meeting on October 19, welcoming a high-profile delegation from Qatar led by Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani, the Director General of the Qatar Investment Agency for Africa and Asia and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ooredoo Group. The esteemed Qatari delegation arrived in Kyrgyzstan on a visit to explore potential investment opportunities and strengthen bilateral ties.
Ooredoo Group, formerly known as Qtel Group, is an international telecommunications giant headquartered in Doha, Qatar, offering a wide array of services ranging from mobile and wireless to wireline and beyond. Established in 1987 as a telephone exchange, it has grown to become Qatar's largest telecom operator and a global industry leader. Notably, Ooredoo was the first company in the world to launch commercial 5G services in Qatar and boasts a customer base of over 156 mn people worldwide.
The meeting between President Japarov and Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani marked a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance Kyrgyzstan's economic and investment landscape. President Japarov, during the meeting, warmly recalled the successful state visit of the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to Kyrgyzstan, highlighting the importance of this visit in cementing the agreements made during the Emir's visit.
The Kyrgyz president expressed his strong belief that this encounter will signify the commencement of close investment cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Qatar, particularly acknowledging the instrumental role Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani plays in attracting Qatari investors to Kyrgyzstan. President Japarov also emphasized the Kyrgyz side's commitment to nurturing investment cooperation, extending all necessary support for investment projects, and actively working to create a favorable investment climate.
While discussing Kyrgyzstan's investment potential, President Japarov underscored the vast opportunities within the hydropower industry, an area with considerable growth potential.
In response, Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani expressed gratitude to President Sadyr Japarov for the warm reception and for opening the door to explore Kyrgyzstan's potential for expanding bilateral cooperation in various sectors. He revealed that, in accordance with the agreements reached between the leaders and the Emir of Qatar, Kyrgyzstan is now hosting representatives from large companies in energy, agriculture, infrastructure development, and other sectors.
Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani highlighted the delegation's commitment to comprehensively studying Kyrgyzstan's investment climate and the various possibilities of investing in the nation's economy. Moreover, he announced the interest of major tourism companies in Qatar in developing cooperation within the tourism industry of Kyrgyzstan.
In a promising development, Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani assured that the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is personally overseeing the implementation of previously agreed-upon arrangements between the two nations, underlining Qatar's sincere commitment to fostering collaboration with Kyrgyzstan.
Both parties reiterated their readiness to develop mutually beneficial cooperation and explore potential investment projects that could further strengthen the ties between the Kyrgyz Republic and the State of Qatar.
