Real Madrid's Brazilian footballer Vinicius Jr has commended Sevilla for their swift action in ejecting and reporting a fan for alleged racial abuse during a recent match.
An image shared by Vinicius on social media appeared to depict a man making a racist gesture towards him. A second clip sent to the player showed another young fan being abusive. After the La Liga match, Sevilla identified and ejected the individual involved, handing them over to legal authorities and applying internal disciplinary measures, with the fan set to be expelled.
The football club expressed its strong condemnation of racist and xenophobic behavior and committed to collaborating with authorities to eliminate such attitudes. Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Sevilla in the game.
Vinicius later posted on social media, praising Sevilla for their quick response and condemning the racial incident, which he stated was the 19th he had experienced. He expressed regret that individuals involved in such acts were not educated and called on the Spanish authorities to change legislation regarding such incidents.
Vinicius also urged for those caught to face criminal punishment. The footballer has been the target of racist insults from opposition supporters on multiple occasions.
In a recent case, he gave evidence in the trial of three Valencia fans accused of racially abusing him during a game in May at the Estadio Mestalla.
